Super Eight Football Competition

The fixtures issued at a meeting of the NFL board had Heartland FC paired against National Division One side, Gateway FC of Abeokuta in the Nigeria Football League organised Super Eight Tournament, which kicks off in Kano from June 18.

League winners Kano Pillars, Bayelsa United, Heartland FC, and Sunshine FC of Akure and four National Division One sides including newly promoted Warri Wolves, FC Abuja and Kaduna United and Gateway FC are the teams scheduled to lock horns in the one-week tournament aimed at rounding off the league season.

NFL chairman, Chief Oyuki Obaseki said during the draws yesterday that the tournament would cost between N25 and N30 million to organise just as he confirmed that the league body would cater for 22 players and three accompanying officials from each of the participating clubs.

Bayelsa United, which narrowly missed the Glo Premier League shield would take on Gateway FC in the opening match that has been re-scheduled to kick off at 4pm instead of the earlier time of 2pm.

In the first match of the day, Gateway defeated Bayelsa United 7-6 on penalties to move the semi-final of the soccer fiesta.

Both teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time before the sudden penalty kicks saw the Abeokuta side, which gained promotion to the Nigeria Premier League at the end of the just concluded National Division One League scored all its five kicks to move to the next stage of the competition.

In the second match of the day, Premier league debu-tants, Warri Wolves shocked CAF Champions League qualifiers, Heartland Football Club of Owerri 1-0 to also move to the semi-final.

The competition enters its second day today, with Kano Pillars trading tackles with Kaduna United FC, while Sunshine and FC Abuja will slug it out in the second match of the day.

All the matches are taking place at the Sani Abacha Stadium Kano.
